According to a recent article in the Irish Examiner, almost 4,000 complaints have been lodged over noise from Dublin Airport in the first half of 2019. Extraordinarily, the DAA revealed that 3,147 complaints were from one person, which makes up around 82% of the complaints registered. The article reports that the person lives in Ongar, West Dublin and on average is making more than 17 complaints per day regarding aircraft noise.
Complaints to Dublin Airport are, understandably, a recurrent feature of daily operations; however, the DAA said that if they excluded repeat objectors, the number of complaints for the first half of 2019 would be around 330. Interestingly, this shows that many people, despite living in busy, urban areas are becoming less tolerant of noise and they are increasingly mindful of the impact noise has on their health. City life is bustling, busy and amenity-rich, but the trade-off for being in the centre of the city or in an urban area is that noise will be louder, more plentiful and it will inevitably cause residents some inconvenience at times. Although city residents are right in the centre of everything and this has many advantages, it can be difficult to find a quiet space.
If you decide to live in a rural area, you will find yourself blessed with quieter surroundings but for that luxury, you will likely have to travel to work or to visit the shops. The trade-off exists and many people are aware of this, yet when they move into noisier areas they struggle to adapt to the situation.
There are demonstrable advantages and disadvantages to living in urban areas, but one of the biggest annoyances is noise and its impact on residents. The World Health Organisation has identified noise as the second most significant environmental cause of ill-health and the world is getting noisier. Considering the impact of noise is crucial when settling into a new area as noise pollution can cause hypertension, high stress levels, tinnitus, hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and other harmful and disturbing effects.
